Personality & Traits

General Overview Workaholic. Intense. Dedicated. These words pretty well define Paul Whitt. Having fairly well determined that any transition to civilian life will be awkward at best for him, Paul has an intense focus on his work. More to the point, it's not for nothing that he's noted, with fear as much as praise, for his work ethic and the hours he puts in. It might also explain why he has had only moderate success with romance. He'd never admit it, but that fact kind of bugs him in the quiet moments he rarely allows himself.
Spoken Languages Federation Standard, Andorian, Romulan, Cardassian, Klingon
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Disciplined to a fault; Natural leader; Workaholic.
Weaknesses: He has no sense of work-life balance at the moment, despite attempts to find it. He also tends to turn his need to keep busy into an excuse to not relax or really take care of himself mentally. Worse, he tends to see it as normal, and expect it from subordinates.
Ambitions If he's lucky, find a wife to settle down with. If not, keep working so as to keep his mind occupied.
Hobbies & Interests SCUBA diving
Horseback riding (English saddle)
Reading (primarily history, historical fiction, and science fiction)

Personal History

Personal History In December 2354, at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, a baby boy came into the world. The son of James Whitt, a noted civil engineer, and Sarah Whitt, a schoolteacher, he had a normal childhood, but he had a habit of defying expectations at every turn. Not for him, his parents' life in normal London, on the paradise that was Earth. As soon as he could, the boy was a Scout and, in his later years, a member of the Combined Cadet Forces at his school. He was constantly dreaming of adventure, of valor. It was, thus, lucky for him that he turned 18 in December 2372, just before the Dominion War began in April 2373. In order to avoid spending years "watching the action", he decided to forego university or even Starfleet Academy, despite having the academic ability in spades for either, and chose to enlist in Starfleet upon his graduation from his sixth-form college in May 2373.

Boot camp, given his previous experience with Cadet Forces and Scouts, wasn't nearly as hard for him as advertised, and he graduated in August 2373 from Basic Training in Newport News, VA, on Earth as his division's honor graduate, with a meritorious promotion to Crewman Apprentice 6 months early, before he even started A-school. A-school followed (in his case, the 12-week Security Forces Basic Enlisted Course at Starfleet Base Southamption in England), followed by assignment to the USS Regent, a Galaxy-class, along with promotion to Crewman.

Then-Crewman Whitt quickly showed himself to be decidedly a workaholic, throwing himself into learning about his new career with a vengeance, especially as the Regent was tasked with participation in Operation Return, the Federation assault to retake Deep Space Nine from the Dominion.

In the actual battles of Operation Return, the Regent and her crew displayed remarkable combat skill and bravery, and Crewman Whitt was not least among them. Specifically, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor for leading firefighting efforts after the loss of his division's entire petty officer contingent to enemy action, despite being the youngest and newest member of the crew.

The Regent would go on to serve in several more war patrols and combat actions until the end of the war in May 2375; along with the end of the war, Crewman Whitt would be promoted to Petty Officer Third Class, and given an assignment to Starbase 375 as a Security Team Leader, one of many security personnel assigned to assist with the incarceration and trial of the Female Changeling for war crimes.

As it turned out, his time on Starbase 375 would be uneventful, which proved to be something of a detriment to his career. Namely, when there's no action to be had, how do you prove yourself? As a result, he nearly left Starfleet when his first enlistment ended in 2377, only being convinced to re-enlist at the last minute by the Command Master Chief. In exchange for his re-enlistment, a few strings were pulled, and the Petty Officer found himself assigned in January 2378 as an as a Special Reaction Team leader on Starbase 212 after 12 weeks' training, where he was responsible for a "SWAT Team" of security personnel responsible, along with regular duties, for handling situations such as barricaded suspects, hostage situations, or other high-risk activities.

This would be his work, then, for the next two years. He'd win numerous commendations for his bravery and calmness under fire, plus a promotion to Petty Officer Second Class in May 2379, even as his superiors would note their worry at the high pace he maintained - not merely training and working, but also trying to complete a Bachelors' degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Alpha Centauri by distance education. It didn't really let up, either, once he was posted as a Recruit Division Commander at Basic Enlisted Training in Newport News, VA in January 2380. He wasn't a natural teacher, but he found that he was good at the role, and he "kinda liked" molding civilians into crewmen. He'd do that for the next 3 years, before being assigned as a Military Training Instructor - teaching such things as basic marksmanship, among other courses - for 4 months.

He would, in due course, be promoted to Petty Officer First Class in April 2383, shortly after he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree. Promotion photos depict a noticeably weary Petty Officer Whitt, and his commanders at the time felt they had no choice but to "strongly suggest" he take the leave he had not used (and allowed to accumulate) in the past 5 years - a total of 5 months of leave; when he looked confused at this suggestion, Commodore Newman, the CO of BET Newport News, was privately blunt: "I like you, kid. You'd be a damn good Chief. However, that won't happen if you burn out or go crazy. Those things will happen if you don't take some time off. Besides, you'd also be really good at graduate school. Do it. You'll thank me later."

So it was that PO1 Whitt found himself taking five months to, somehow, learn how to relax. (Reports since indicate that, while he tries, the lesson only partly stuck.) After that, he was assigned to Starfleet Command as a Flag Aide to the Commander of Starfleet Security, a fairly light posting that accommodated his graduate school studies towards a jointly awarded Master in Public Policy and Master of Business Administration at Harvard University. (If he couldn't work on Starfleet stuff, he figured he'd work on academics instead.) He actually did fairly well at both work and education, and graduated with a 3.8 out of 4.0 GPA in May 2385. After the successful completion of his tour in May 2385, he was assigned to Beta Ursilae II for the ten-week Senior Enlisted Academy, following which he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer and assigned to the USS President, a Sovereign-class assigned along the Romulan Neutral Zone.

He did fairly well there, integrating easily into the ship's Goat Locker, training junior Ensigns in the ways of leadership and helping to discipline the young crewmen - and finding it hard to believe he'd ever been that young himself.

Following that two-year tour, he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer, and assigned in 2387 to serve as an enlisted aide to the Secretary of Defense. He did fairly well at this tour, along the way making numerous contacts among senior policymakers in the Federation government. As a result, in November 2391, he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer, and assigned to the then-still-under-construction USS Jerusalem (then the Pre-Commissioning Unit Jerusalem) as her Command Master Chief, otherwise known as the Chief of the Boat, in December 2391.
